reasons for art.

Art, in all of its forms, is part of who I am. It is what gives my life variety, beauty, and meaning. It helps me express and understand. It pushes me forward to progress and become a better person. It gives me reason. It is the reason. The reason is art.

Art education has almost always been a subject of controversy. Art classes are being cut out of the K-12 system all of the time and as a future Art Educator this can be daunting. My project revolved around why art education matters and why it should be part of the core curriculum STEM. I learned all about this as I spent three days in Seattle at the NAEA National Convention with other members of SUU’s NAESA club. The theme for the national convention was STEAM which is the integration of Art into the core subjects of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. There were a variety of over 1,000 different sessions, workshops, tours, and events that I got to choose from on top of being surrounded by 5,000 in-service Art Educators to be inspired by. I had the opportunity to visit the Seattle Art Museum, Frye Art Museum, and Museum of Pop Culture. I recorded my experiences in a journal which includes handouts and photographs. I finished my project by gathering information I had learned on why art education is important, created a conclusion statement, and made a visual display.

about.

hello.

My name is Lindsey Nelson and this website exhibits my journey in discovering the reasons why art is important to society, individuals, and our education system. I learned more about these concepts through my experience at the NAEA conference in Seattle 2018 . I took the insights learned in Seattle and did some research of my own to put my new understandings into words. In my paper, Reasons for Art I dive into the ways art impacts the world: the history it has provided, the way it has developed economy and trade, its power to express and communicate, how it shapes culture, and in what ways it benefits students’ learning. This knowledge really solidified my understanding of why art matters and I now feel confident in my career path to be a future art educator.
